After spending the winter rebuilding my 1995 johnson 115 I started it up for the first time this week and it sounded great. Approximatly 45 minutes after running it began to miss fire & puff a small amount of smoke out of the seam were the block joins together just behind the starter. obviously the gell seal didn't hold.the bottle instructs to use a small 1/16" bead and use sparringly.any tips for my next "crack" at it would be appreciated!

ps** how long does it take to cure?

not much of a tip, but, I usually coat both flanges with a thin film (smooth it around with finger) (avoid any small bleeder drillings) then I add a small bead about center of the flanges. I let it cure atleast a day before use. Longer the better....

You will have to pull the block halves apart again. I know this is not what you want to hear but I have had that happen a couple of years ago and have never use gel seal since. I like yamabond or motoseal by permatex. They both dry and unlike gel seal will never dry it only gets hard when compressed. The other two products fill the voids and after 24 hours the engine can be used. Pull the block apart clean the crankcase halves with acetone and then use your sealer and assemble. Good Luck Another thing will gel seal is the shelf life is very short.

When using gel-seal, the surface must be clean of all old sealant. To be sure of this, a service bulletin reccomends the use of a black light. Another thing is to wash your hand's to be sure you have no grease, or oil on them. Use the recommended primer. I don't think there is a more sinking feeling than to have an engine altogether, and blowing blue smoke out of the case halves. I'll bet. others have had this happen. Follow the directions. Also if you have an open tube of gel-seal around, put it right in the trash can. This is a headache waiting to happen. A poor place to save a dollar, or two.

Also when using gel-seal, lock the shop door, take the phone off the hook.

I had this happen to me on a 235 V/6 of all engines. Called Loc-Tite as they are the makers of Gel_Seal. " say'es so right on the container" asking for an update on a better product. 3 or 4 exchanges later, and 1/2 hour later of eleavator music, "never heard of it"

Gel seal will fail if the mating surfaces have oil on them or there is old sealant on them. You didnt use enough or there was enough set up time 24 hours.

Re: omc gel seal?

I have never had any problems with Gel Seal, Loctite 518 or Permatex 51813. Never had a mating surface leak or ever had any of the stuff go bad on the shelf. I guess the longest I ever kept a tube was 8 months.
