I have just changed the Gimbal bearing on my Cobra drive, there is a grease hole in the casing but there are no threads in the hole to take a greaser? there was a rubber plug in it when I came to it. This seems a bit strange as it could never have been greased, there is a corosponding hole in the outer casing that looks like it could be for an extended greaser or tube of some sort, can anyone shed any light on this, thanks.

No its origonal no sign of having been messed with at all.
Going to have to get some 8mm tube and cement it in and put a greaser on the end??

That tube is supposed to be sealed to the gimbal hole with gasket sealing stuff, if I recall correctly. I can't recall how it's held in the gimbal housing shield, but it's supposed to be there. Someone before you lost it.

Oh - and you should get a manual. As an OMC owner you are almost obligated to do so.

Re: omc greaser

I have made one and it fits great, the problem now is the grease will not go into the bearing it pumps out into where the u-joints will be when the drive is fitted, the tolerence ring that goes around the bearing is split where the hole is and the grease is getting out there, the other thing is where is the grease suposed to go? Iknow that seems a silly question but having looked at the old one, the only place the grease can go is around the outside in a groove in the carrier it canr get into the bearing it looks sealed is this correct, any help would be apreaciated.

I did the same project last year. The gimbal bearing I purchased, has a hole in the "tolerance ring" that you can line up over the grease hole. You may not have the hole in the ring. Also, you may not have the bearing pressed all the way in. I don't like that the grease is spitting out of the edges. The bore holding the bearing could be worn out.

I hate to tell ya, but you might want to pull it out and retry. How tight was the old bearing? Was it a pain to pull out? It should be. If it pulls out easy this time, the bore is worn. Also buy the right bearing with the hole.

Cheers

used a slide hammer to get the bearing out, came out ok, the bearing has a hole but when you take the bearing out of the ally ring there is nowhere for4 the grease to go except in between the bearing and the outer ring, the bore should be ok the boat only has 426 hours on it.

Spin the "outer ring" around and look in the hole as you spin it. You should find a hole that goes into the bearing housing. Line up the holes to the grease fitting. As to the bore, if you can slide the bearing in without pressing it back in, it may be worn. If you have to press it back in, say by tapping it in with a hammer, it may be tite enough. If you haven't done so, replace the o-rings on the shaft. This can help keep the bearing from poping out but its not full proof.

Removed it again today the holes were lined up, but I have mwasures the hole depth in the housing and refittedthe bearing so the hole is exactly lined up and not as it was origonally, whilst out I got as much grease it as I could into it now its back in ok some grease does still escape but whilst a greater presure has built up, refitted new bellows just waiting for the leg (too heavy on my own) and happy days. thanks guys.
