Anybody know what I can use as an equivalent? OMC 460 King Cobra outdrive with milky oil, what can I use to replace the old stuff.

Also, should I flush the system somehow to get all the old stuff out or is draining sufficient? It's pretty clumpy so I'm not sure everything came out.

Last, anybody know a good OMC marine shop in the Tacoma, WA area?

Re: OMC Hi-Vis Gear Oil

Bill,

I just did my Bravo III and used the Mercruiser gear lube. I got it at Boaters World in Tacoma. It's not cheap...somewhere around $12/qt but you only need around 3.5 qts for a King Cobra. (108 oz I think)

Next time I'll probably use Amsoil or Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube.

You could probably put some diesel fuel or kerosene in it and spin it over by hand to clean it out....do it a couple of times.... then put some regular gear oil in it to get any pooled diesel out before using the synthetic. But if you have a leak, it will need to be resealed and pressure checked before you put the "good stuff" in it and put it in the water.

BE ABSOLUTELY SURE YOU FOLLOW THE OMC DIRECTIONS for refilling the Cobra. It fills different from a Mercruiser.

Cheers,

Rick

Thanks guys, I appreciate the information. Is cleaning it out necessary or just overkill?

If it had any signs of water or metal shavings on the drain plug magnet then at least flush it with some gear lube before the final refill.

you need to figure out why your oil got milky by pressure or vacuum testing your drive. It will just ge milky again.

Good point Bruce, Milky oil means water in the oil. The most common place for that to happen is from a leaky ujoint bellows.
When was the last time the drive was pulled off, bellows, gimbal bearing, ujoints, and alignment checked??????

Re: OMC Hi-Vis Gear Oil

I know a seal change is in order. I oredered a kit, but it has not arrived. In the meantime, I was hoping to throw some automotive gear oil in there so I can run the motor to make adjustments and fine tune. Side benefit is flushing?

No metal on the plug.

Don S - Two years ago, boat sat all of last year. This is according to seller.

Good marine shop for OMC in Tacoma??????

Don S - Ocean Shores is way too windy, come to Puyallup and set up shop. We are the home of the State Fair fer chrissakes!!

My Good deal is getting expensive.
