OMC Horsepower Question

I have a 1989 Bayliner 1952 Capri Cuddy. It has a OMC 2.3 engine. This boat appears to have been owned by someone that neglected it badly. Any data plates or tags are gone and I'm wondering if anyone knows what the horsepower rating on this motor would be. I called US Marine and requested an owners manual and spec sheet but that info wasn't there for the sterndrive. Any help would be great. Thanks to all.

Re: OMC Horsepower Question

The 2.3 is pretty rare, so there is not a lot of good info out there. They were rated at 128 hp at the propshaft. It is an overhead cam Ford engine and revs very high. The WOT range is 5200 - 5600 RPM and you will be told by many that you can't run it that high, but that's where they need to be setup . . .

Thank you QC. I knew it was a Ford motor, I had one in my Ranger pick-up that I thought of pulling and building but my son just had to have it. What can ya do?:)

Re: OMC Horsepower Question

there are alot of parts in the auto industry for that motor and they can be made to make good power and rev out of this world...

we had a ranger that ran in the 9s just on the motor and lots of compression so they can live...not sure you'd want that in a boat though..;)

I was just thinking of punching it a little and re-camming it. Maybe cutting the deck and head a little and fly-cutting the pistons for valve clearance. I have an idea for top end oiling that I want to play with. Anyone that's had a high mileage Ford 4 cyl knows that area needs improvement. The only other idea I was thinking was doing some port matching.

top end oiling is fine on those...the bottom is priority oiling...when the pump gets week or a bearing spins thats when the tops goes dry...

I have changed some busted cams due to a lower spun bearing

dr bowtie, that is odd. I've owned two 2.3 and one 2.0 and the problem I had on both was the rockers wearing severely on the cam lobes. Think that's pumps? I'm being serious, I hate changing cams and rockers.

:( It's not really a POS, the engine runs fine and the drive is in good shape, the price was quite reasonable. The hull is in good shape too, it just has a lot of weather damage to the interior and a couple of soft spots in the interior plywood. Nothing that can't be repaired. Can tou send me a list of all these FREE boats that you speak of please.

I'm still waiting on that list of BETTER FREE BOATS. If you're gonna speak up... PUT UP or shut up. Someone with your status on this forum should honestly realize that no other person can put a price on another mans boat. The value lies within.

Bondo tells it how he sees it with no looking back, I doubt he'll respond, but please relax . . . His comments come from combining an old Bayliner (kinda scary) + OMC drive (gone and scary) + Ford 2.3 (gone from marine). There is no list for him to supply as you know, but there are free boats out there, some with 3.0 Mercs or Volvos which are easier to find parts for and/or still in production.

Ayuh,... Thanks QC for bringin this back up,... I only make it through page 1,.... Usually...

OK,... If it Runs so nicely,... Sell it while it is, hopefully for a Profit....(There's the Free part)
Then go find another boat with a Mercruiser(Not a 470), or Volvo power...
Atleast you'll be able to buy Parts for it...

The Hull is Not in "Good Shape",... It's an old Rotten, Abused 20 Year old Bilgeliner with OMC power...
That weather damaged interior,..??? figure 2 to 3 Grand for a bubblegum replacement, Nothing Fancy...
Those couple of Soft Spots,..??? That'll turn into a COMPLETE replacement of the stringers, transom,+ the deck... figure Another Grand or 2 for supplies...

I'm Not trying to Attack you about your barge,...
I'm trying to Open your Eyes to the Reality of just What you've got....
You can find a Better Barge to start with,.. Then you can be a Boater...
With what you've got,... You'll be turning wrenches if you can buy the Parts,...
Or grinding,+ laying fiberglass,... Wishing you were Boatin'..........

Bondo certainly is entitled to his opinion and it is certainly his right to voice it if he chooses. What Bondo maybe forgets is sometimes shutting ones trap goes along way!
Only my opinion.
