My main problem is the clutch isn't holding the tilt drive unit. I can raise the unit by hand, but the unit won't stay in any up position. I had the clutch apart and believe I put it back right (with difficulty).

I just removed the clutch unit and it was much simplier this time. I used my vice and vicegrip plyers to compress the unit as to get the e clips out. I am hoping to hear from anyone concerning this clutch problem.

You might want to give some information like year and model of the drive.

Hello Don,

On top of the drive: 120-155 H.P. 383129
The boat is an arrow glass 1974?? Chevy 4 cyl inline
On engine is: Cutf 19-E JO12 3327
I searched again today and can find no year on the stern drive unit. I plan to take a picture tomorrow and scan it, then maybe, I can post a picture of the unit.

I couldn't get a decent picture from my new manual. After studying the manual, I decided I need a new clutch and I removed the tilt motor. It quit working. The motor looks alright, except a little rusty. I will check the motor on the bench tomorrow. The boat is old and was given to me without papers. Due to a domestic problem, the papers were lost. Maybe, the boat will never get into the water, but I want to try to fix it.

I checked the tilt motor and did some work on it. The brushes are worn alot and there seems to be a short somewhere in the field. With all there is wrong with the boat, it is probably best I look for another boat here in North Carolina. I only had one reply on this post, but I thank you all for reading.

Hmmmmmm. I see why you only had 1 reply, since I don't do OMC stingers, I couldn't help you. BUT, if you would learn how to post, you might get more replies.
I see you are just hitting the Reply-Quote button and then typing your new comments inside the quotes, so when you do post it looks like you are just quoting someone.
Best thing to do is scroll to the bottom of the screen and use the Instant reply section. Saves all the long quotes for no reason. Then you will probably get some replies.
There are plenty of guys here that work on the stringers all the time and can help. But not if they can't find your replies.

Hello Don,

Thanks for the information. I noticed in the news today that there are more veterans in Alaska than anywhere. I visited my son in Anchorage years ago and loved it. I am a retired disabled Air Force veteran. Had I gone to Alaska while in the military, I probably would have moved there. Thanks again.

I am not sure I can help. Since the boat is a 1974 it is likely your outdrive is also a 1974. I have a 1980 unit and can't get my clutch to slip at all. I was having trouble getting the outdrive to lift. I took the clutch apart and cleaned it all up and when putting it back together could not get the snap ring back on so I removed one disk and one shim. Used vice grips on one side and a vice on the other and got the snap ring back on. To this day have not been able to get the outdrive to kick up so I wish I had removed more shims.

I not sure if your model is the same as mine or not but some models have an adjustment inside to adjust to the proper torque. I think there was a tool to attach so you could use a torque wrench to messure torque to slip clutch. Also an adjustment bolt change torque.

How sure are you that the clutch pack is enguaging the worm gear?

Will the out drive lift with the motor?

On my unit I belive the only way to adjust slipage of the clutch is to add or remove shims and disk. On my unit shims and disk alternate. At the top every other one enguages the worm gear.

Good luck someone knows your unit but in the off season not as many logon so may take a while to find that person. Keith has a lot of knowledge.

Re: OMC I/O TILT PROBLEM

Hello Boatist,

Nice to hear from you. I am attaching a picture of an arbor press which the book recommends using on the clutch plates. I did like you and used a vise and visegrips. I have other problems. My motor is shot. I compared the clutch to some shown in the manual and I think my plates may be worn too much. I checked my engine serial number in the manual and I think everything is 1970. It sounds alot like yours though.
Again, Thanks.
John
