Omc Ignition Conversion "the Right Way?"

Hi Everyone,

Well I decided to start this topic after reading different views and information about the omc conversion.

I have researched this greatly, and have seen that stuart (great site) has done the ignition conversion but added a radio shack circuit that he published.

The information I have obatained not to use the seirra conversion but to use the pertronix conversion as it will work with the new cdi ESA replacement.
I also read that you need to get a 12 volt coil such as flame thrower II and not use the existing stock OMC 6 volt coil or it will burn out the ESA.

And also after the conversion to adjust (widen your gap of the spark plugs as per spec)

Now in the 1 page conversion manual from pertronix it shows using a shunt resistor, as well as to use a 6 volt coil.

Another marine site says dont use the resistor/diode circuit as it is not reliable and to use the pertronic e-ignition conversion with new cdi as you dont need this extra circuit then.

Well who is right, which information is right?

Has anyone actually done one of these conversions themselves, not just what they have read, or been told, but has actually done one on a omc 86-93 omc (I have a 5.8L Ford).

I want to make sure I do this right and have already purchased the New ESA, 12 Volt Flame thrower II coil, Pertronicx E_Ignition conversion kit.

Any further info from anyone would help out considerable

Thanks :D

Heres a way to do it like a merc, latter for the esa.

I looked at the 2 pictures, but are they not interelated for same thing?

ALso on an omc ford there is only 2 wire connections on coil, picture shows 4 or more, also more wires on distributor on picture then omc.

I found the pictures not very clear how to exactly wire the present omc ford to the way mercruiser electronic-ignition.

Unless I am missing something, more info would be appriecated.

Now based on the ignitor II kit I have received using there igniter II coil that is 12 volt and .6 ohm, they say use stuarts resister and diode circuit to the new ESA update module. But they also say to remove the bypass resistor or wires. That concerns me as I read somewhere that that would end up cooking the ESA, unless of course the resistor/diode circuit protects it.

But are they basing the info of the circuit on the 8 volt stock coil and not the 12 volt replacement ignitor II coil?

Important questions I am asking since I want to get this right the 1st time.

thanks in advance for any info to clear things up.

I have actually done the Pertronix CDI conversion in my OMC about 4 years ago. As stated by the manufacturer - it's a direct replacement for the points & condenser. Drop it in and go.

Just forget about those pictures, they are for a Chevy engine using a GM distributor that doesn't even exist for a Ford engine.

Before you go to all the trouble to go to a Pertronix system, pull the points plate out of the distributor and look at the springs on the weights. If they are rusty, not moving, or the springs are a ball of rust, you might want to consider a new distributor.
Mallory makes an electronic replacement distributor for Ford engins.

on my 1989 Four Winns Liberater (351 Ford/OMC Cobra) I had a local marina replace my points with an ECM. The cost was $350, and the results were incredible. Money well spent.

Question please.
Now with you conversion done, if anything were to happen with the module could you just slap in a set of points/cond. or does the interrupt switch modification negate the swap?

Yes, I keep a set of points and condenser on board just in case.
This upgrade made a helluva difference for the better.

So Dennis, how is your conversion going done yet? I'm just wondering if you built your own shift interrupt circuit or did you find an already made harness? I was thinking about doing my 5.8 Cobra too, but another year goes by and the coversion just keeps being put on back burner.
