omc ignition problem

I have a 1982 OMC 3.0 - 140hp. I can't start it only with the key. (I don't even ear explosion) But when I disconnect the gas control from shift cable and play with the gas control and the choke control directly from the carburator during the ignition (with the key) the motor start with no problem. After I reconnect back the shift cable with the gas control and everything works fine.<br /><br />I think the automatic choke is the problem...

I want to make sure this is the OMC Sterndrive Serries 400 140 HP??<br />I guess I have several questions. First when you turn the key is the motor turning over??? If it not turning do you have it in gear. Or netural start switch is bad. If it is turning have you pulled Shifter toward you and pushed forward several times to set choke and prime it with a little gas???

Yes, this is a OMC Sterndrive serries 400 140HP.<br /><br />Yes the motor is turning at neutral position.<br /><br />No I do not pushed forward several times...Maybe this is my problem... I will try this next time.<br /><br /> Thank you very mutch!

If you have the single lever shifter like most. Grab the shifter down near the pivot point and pull it toward you. After it pulls out you can advance throttle without pulling the red button and putting it in gear. advance the throttle all the way a couple of times before try to start it. This will set the choke and accerlator pump will squirt a little fuel in. If it has been setting for weeks probably no gas in carb so have to turn engine a little before accerlator pump will work. When starting starts easier at about 1/3 full throttle, but make sure you keep hand on throttle so can pull back when starts as do not want to over rev. After a while you will learn best postion to start it.
