I have a 1993 four winns 230 horizons with 454 engine, and a king cobra outdrive. I replaced a broken lower shift cable about 3 weeks ago. Ever since then, I've had nothing but problems. If I put the earmuffs on it and run it, I can get forward, neutral and rverse. But as soon as I put it in the lake it will go into forward maybe once, I can always get it to go into reverse and neutral, but when I put it in forward it just revs up the rpm's. so I take it home and hook it back up to earmuffs again I can get forward again. this is getting very frustrating, if anyone has been through this before, please let me know how to fix it. thanks, john

Yes John I go to Arcadia.Have a season pass.Go when I can,but not lately.Understand level on lake is way down, plus it has just been to hot to go.
Someone might correct me but from looking at my manuals the cable adjustment is the same.I just replaced the cable on mine.Mine is a 91 4.3HO in a Mariah.Mine had the old black cable and did not shift well.So I bought the new red one and went after it.
I haven't found anyone around here that really knows much or can really work on Cobras.
If check this forum a lot you can find a lot of good info.It has been a life safer for me.

Phil,
Where did you purchase the RED shift cable? I've spoke with several local repair shops and they seem oblivious to the problems related to shift cables.

Believe it or not I bought my new in the box off of Ebay.Do a search on Ebay for OMC,ton of things. Also you can order nearly anything for OMC drives and engines from:
http://www.dougrussell.com/
Also they have great diagrams.
I can tell you by replacing the cable and doing the correct adjustments to cable,my drive shifts as they say with 2 fingers.

Re: omc king cobra shift problem

John, I did a shift cable on my 88 OMC COBRA ( Not King Cobra ) I dont know if they are Different, But it took me quite a Bit of time to adjust the dam thing right ! I had to keep Pulling the Lower end off and rotating the little Metal adjuster sleeve.

How i finally got the whole thing done was to follow the EXACT procedures in the Manual. It goes through some bizarre steps with the carb and Shifter Cam adjustments First, then it gets into the Cable adjustment.

Another way is to Nutralize everything and then measure Foward and reverse Throw..Complicated to explain but I have done this before with Merc OD.

I knwo how fustrating it is, Keep at it...adjust only a Little at a time..a Little of that adjustment goes a long way. 2 Thread lengths can swing 1/4 Inch adjustment.

I hope I helped and not fustrated you more

John
