I've got a 89 King Cobra that I just bought and I'm planing on changing the gear lube... No with that said I went off and bought a book on this this whole setup.. In the book it tells me to take out the dip stick on top then drain from bottom.

No to refill it just tell you to pull your new "OMC Hi-Vis" gearlube into the hole where your dipstick goes... now every where that I read it talks about using a pump and pumping the lube UP from the bottom to the top..

SO WHAT DO I NEED TO DO ?????

Question #2
Now that OMC is no more do I use just any Marine Hi-Vis grear lube ?

Thanks for your time !

Nathan

Re: OMC Lower unit lube

Well in the front part of this manual in the Preventive service section it says to add lube from the top of the unit..... 100 page past that sites the section on the lower unit. it tells me to fill it up with lube from the bottom.. ( just like what I have been readding.)

Any ideas on what lube is the best ?

Nathan

hello
for just topping off, if it were ever nessasary you can add small amounts from the top to bring the level to the middle of the marks on the dip stick. but for a complete fill you need to fill from the bottom to the top. all the GL-5 rated oils will work but in the cone clutch models I like the volvo synthetic. and do not over fill this unit. over filling kills many cone clutch OMC's and volvo's.
good luck and keep posting.

Nathan...if it's truly a 1989 then it's probably still the clutch dog style (you don't say what size engine?).There are actually 3 screws for the oil, the top dipstick, the bottom drain and the middle fill. The bottom and middle are the same type of screw. My factory OMC manual tells me to drain from the bottom and then put that screw back in afill from the middle until it comes to the top. You can still get the OMC Hi-Vis lube at most Johnson/Evinrude dealers and a screw in pump that goes directly into the lube container.
ps....the old clutch/dog style drive has flat top and the cone clutch has a hump on top.

Like Bob said you can still get OMC hi vis and also now the have the newer HPF gear oil which is for Cobras too, both are sold by Evinrude/Johnson dealers. A 1989 may well still be the dog clutch style, in some years the King was no different that the regular Cobras as far as the OD goes. I saw a cone clutch King on a 1990 Four Winns Liberator and it looked totally differnt that the others.
Before you start working on it you would do well to invest in an OMC shop manual, they can be ordered from the dealer and are way better than aftermarket.
