I need to fix the cooling system on my 79 OMC 260.

The manifolds are original I believe, I could be wrong. The boat has about 650 hours. No matter what else related to the cooling system that needs fixing these manifolds are done, they need to be replaced if I'm going to get some years out of this thing.

So I've looked at the GLM and the comments on here have me skeptical.

Ebasicpower has a whole kit for a little bit more that is Osco brand. I could do that.

My question is this:

A local marine store where I buy parts has suggested using center risers and rebuilding the whole system like in the picture. I could reuse the heat exchanger on my closed system. His price includes all hoses, fittings and Barr manifolds. It's not cheap though. $900.

He claimed several benefits to the center riser and he was pushing me not to buy the "chinese" made manifolds as they are "very pourous".

Anyway, is he full of it, or is this a good plan?

Howdy,

Well you'll probably get several opinions. I wouldn't do the GLM either just based on the people here that have had problems with them.

I would also do the center riser type. replace everything though.

Cheers,

The Barr-Osco brand are good manifolds.Never heard of any problems with them.
900 is not bad though to replace the whole deal with center risers...

So, could someone please explain what the advantage of a center riser is over the stock? I'm curious.

Re: OMC manifolds

Ed, that's a good question. I was hoping maybe some people here would add comments regarding the use of the center riser manifolds on the OMC.

For what it's worth, the sales guy at my parts store said that the engine would run better, more efficient, last longer. I'm not neccesarily convinced though.

I think there would be less restriction in the exhaust and the engine would run better. The big plus is once it is converted over the next time you need risers, manifolds, ect it would be cheaper for the parts...Just my guess..

They worked. They went on pretty easy. I have more pictures of the install and a few notes that might help others.

For now here's a picture of the final product.
