Omc mechanical shift cable install

I have purchased a new omc shift cable (sold my least favorite child) but have hit a snag on the re-install. Because I spent all my money on the cable I don't have the manual that tells me how to properly re-install. My primary issue is getting the rack to properly engage on the shift housing. I thought I had it but after it was all assembled I had reverse and neutral but no forward. I have an 85 galxie with the OMC stringer. Any help would be great.

I've watched that video a billion times, problem is it doesn't show the cable length or rollback needed to set the housing in place. Everything else from the video was spot on.

So even with the 7 23/32 (within limits) of the distance travel, I still can't get the unit to properly shift once all hooked up. It seems to be binding when it's hooked up to the shift converter....I'm out of ideas...

One problem solved, I had the 180 twist wrong on the shift converter. Now getting the linkage adjusted so it goes in gear prior to rpms.I wonder if my shift housing is one tooth off on the ratchet?
