That's not a military 50 hp outboard. J40RLEIA is a long shaft recreational 40 hp from 1991. Go to this link, and you'll find your model number in the list under recreational outboards. You can get a manual from an Evinrude dealer.

There is no military model with that model number, and if it says J40, it's a Johnson 40 hp outboard. The A is just a model run number. EI is 1991. R is rope start. L is long shaft.

Probably the only difference between military and civilian is the paint anyhow.

I have seen only one military model from years ago, there was more difference than just the paint. It did not resemble anything I ever seen from OMC.

Thanks. Now I guess I have to chase this guy down. The papers he gave me are for a 2002 50 horse motor.

Re: OMC Military Outboard Motors

Are you in a state that requires titles for outboards? If not, the guy may well have thought he had what he told you the outboard was. Nothing wrong with a 1991 40hp model. In fact, in the long run, it's a better deal, since some parts for military models are impossible to get.

Still, it's 11 years older than stated. But it may not be the seller's fault. Lots of folks believe whatever they're told. Or, it could be a bogus deal.

Good luck, in either case.
