OMC model number question

I am trying to find out about my upper unit. The model number is 981059. I have looked and I cannot find that model number anywhere. As a matter of fact both of my twins have the same model number. I think they are 1977, 175hp.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: OMC model number question

that sounds like a model number of the outdrive tag on the upper gearcase. They weren't really ever referenced outside of the factory. I've never seen a reliable listing of the those 9XXXXXX numbers anywhere, or anything that crosses them to gear ratios/ engine models.

Re: OMC model number question

It is the one on the upper gearcase. How else might I be able to find out exactly what I got. I know they are 175's. But wanted to know the gear ratios, and etc., so if I come across a good deal for some gears or something. I know my engines are 302's, 175's. But I know there has been work down on both outdrives and engines. I believe they are low profile as well.

Re: OMC model number question

the Seloc OMC 1964-1985 manual has a pretty good chart of ratios year by year, sorted by HP.

Yes those are low profile.
