question to anyone with a similar experience i removed battery altenator and voltage regulator wires on my 1984 omc 5.7 litre with 800 stringer o/d. cleaned all corrosion( not really much) today after work i connected and when i turned the battery switch on the 50 amp mains fuse blew any ideas perhaps the alt cable is touching the alternator shell or the positive on the regulator is touching more than just the post im guessing:mad:

Was everything o.k. before you disconnected your wires to clean them ?

Then you shouldn't have a problem then, unless you shorted something out when re-connecting your wires, are you sure everything is correctly connected + to positive and - to negative. If its wired correctly put another fuse in and see what happens.

You might want to look in the "Adults Only" sticky thread at the top of this forums page and find the manual for your drive package. Its free!

Re: omc nightmare

It is shorting out,,,
seems like the hot wire form the solenoid is shorted to ground.
U would need a multi meter or an ohm meter, disconnect the hot wire then ring it out between your ground.
Or, leave them wires as they are(still connected) to ring them first then ring em out again after all the wires been removed.
We are just trying to narrow it down here.
Since U mentioned, when U turned the switch on the 50amp fuse this happens. I do not think it's the overloading problem since there is no load,,,
good luck!

Re: omc nightmare

 fixed problem well i found the culprit when i reconnected my positive alternator wire after brushing it free of rust the frekin cable was touching the body of the alternator itself causing a short thus blowing the fuse wow how easy it is to overlook something if you look too hard lol thanks to all of you cool folks out there and happy boating this season!!
