OMC out drive problems

I have a 1977 OMC I/O that i have used for years without problems. I always use type C oil in the out drive because of the electric shift this model has. Last week the out drive acted like it slipped out of gear. I disassembled the out drive unit and found nothing wrong. I went as far as taking the reverse coil out of the lower unit. Is there a splined shaft in the lower unit somewhere??? I have checked the wires going to the out drive and they have power, i checked both forward and reverse wires. I will check the coils as soon as i get a hold of a volt meter but my feeling is they will be O.K. both coils would not go bad at the same time. Can someone point me in the right direction i'm able to do the work and can not afford to take it to the boat shop.

Re: OMC out drive problems

Thanks you for your response. And that was a good question I've had this happen to me before so i checked this out. The prop rubber dampener is in good shape and is not slipping. I can turn the prop when the key is on and the shifted is engaged. I can feel a difference between neutral and in gear but the shaft and prop both turn.

Might be worn water pump shaft splines.

Thanks captk
I plan on taking my out drive apart tonight after i check one more thing. My friend suggested checking the ground wire,i have already checked the power to my electric shift OMC and this checked out O.K. but if i have a bad ground the power does no good - I think ? I will update in a few days to explain what i find.

There are three things that I would further examine.

If you are running original wiring and or shifting switches in the boat, you could have experienced a momentary loss of 12v to the magnet.

I would highly recommend checking the grounding bond cable.

Also, do not brush off the prop suggestion. I have had this happen last season, drove me nuts. My boat was running fine, then one day, I had the slipping up around 3000 rpm. Went back to mooring to investigate. Everything seemed AOK including the prop, as you stated that you checked. Then it started to happen around 2500 rpm. The hub was holding and turning fine untill a certain load was reached. Still could not tell by hand that the hub had slipped. I did the mark thing from the cone to the prop. Sure enough the next time it happened, the marks were way misaligned.

In case you didn't download them, these are the files that I supplied for the Adults only sticky. The links are gone now but the files are still there.

Re: OMC out drive problems

captk was correct i disassembled the water pump in the upper unit and found stripped spline gears. Wow - all of the suggestions i received from this site were very helpful. Thanks to KRH1326 for the manual on my out drive this will be very helpful. I'm not sure where it came from but thank out very much. I would like to thank all the people that offered suggestions they were appreciated very much. I feel allot better knowing whats wrong now i need to find the parts and get this old out drive back together with the correct gear clearance.
