My friend has a late 80's OMC 200hp EFI model outboard engine on his boat. I'm not sure the year, but its on a outdrive style bracket that is attached to the engine.

When we turn the key, the starter engages the fly-wheel, but it appears that no electrical current is getting to the plugs. batteries are fine and so are sparkplugs. One time I connected the positive of a jumper cable to the block and the other end to a plug boot, and it fired up instantly. Does this indaicate there is a short in the system or possibly the spark plug cables need to be replaced?

Re: OMC outboard help

king - I would first disconnect the battery cables at the battery and the cables to the starter including the solinoid. Clean thoroughly to a bright shine with sandpaper, lightly grease and reconnect. If that dosen't do it I would continue to check & clean all wiring related to the ignition. Spark plugs could be part of it but I would doubt it (they are however cheap & easy to replace).
