I have a 1988 Cruisers Inc.26.6 Vee Sport with 7.5 OMC (460 Ford) engine. Have been unable to find any numbers due to rust. It has no outdrive so my question is behind a 6000 lb. boat with a 7.5L engine, what OMC outdrive do I need to find and purchase for this boat? Thanks

If nobody knows the answer to my question maybe someone can tell me if I can put a later model Volvo drive on it. Thanks

Yes, NEW OMC outdrives are no longer available, but there are plenty of used units available. GLM and others sell new gearsets & other parts. It may take some work, but it can be done. Having said that, you MAY want to consider converting over to a Mercruiser unit. Will tale come initial work, but you'll never be forced to hunt for parts on eBay.

Re: OMC Outdrive Advice Needed

I did see the outdrive that was removed and it was a Cobra outdrive that had 3.0 on the tag. The boat was moving thru the water and then it just reved real high and once he attempted to put it back into forward it would only whine. It did operate in reverse. The engine runs really great and has quite a lot of new parts on it such as the risers and manifolds but the outdrive is the problem. Someone recently told me that any V8 OMC outdive would bolt up but may need to be regeared differently.

That was a KING cobra, very hard to find indeed, and for that matter hard to find in working order. Best bet is to find a mercruiser bravo I w/454 engine. You will not touch a 454 w/ bravo III for an affordable price. Everyone knows the value of them.......

You will not want to go down to a 350 engine in that big boat. It will be a real dog.

That would be the sound of the forward gear giving up the ghost. A new lower gear set, costs approx $1000. GLM has a used set for $550. If you end up working with that outdrive, it will likely require additional parts.

GREAT website for assistance with King Cobra's and Cobra's. I myself just purchased a boat with Twin 305s, OMC Cobra's...

http://www.sterndrive.info/

They have part numbers, and you can purchase parts for them as well, if you do a search on the internet you can find decent priced parts... All depends on how long you wait and how well you search. I found a gear set for close 250 brand new in the box for my cobra's. I bought it as a spare, you never know.
