I recently purchased a 1987 Reinell 185F boat with an OMC V6 motor and Cobra outdrive. The exhaust bellows is bad and I would like to replace it. Does the entire outdrive have to be removed to replace the exhaust bellows? I have a repair manual, but it doesn't address this specific repair.

Re: OMC Outdrive Exhaust Bellows

I dont even run mine. It went bad ( broke all the way around basically on one of the ribs) so i jsut took it off completely. made the boat slightly louder but thats about it. Ill put one in when i go to my yearly service.

But yes you need to remove the outdrive to get the snap ring out. I suppose you could jsut trim the drive all the way up and use a LONG pair of snap ring or needle nose plliers to put the snap ring on from the outside but you cant really see what youre doing and the ring may not be seater right or the bellows may not be over the lip of the housing right.
I did it once fromt heoutside but it was more of a luck thing IMO
