Took off outdrive this weekend. I am planning on keeping it off for the winter while I do some repairs on it. Is there any do's and dont's that I need to know (like - not put it in gear, don't touch this thing or that? etc...)

I just don't want to be trying to put it back together in the spring and find out that I broke something due to ignorance (I break enuff while out on the water).

Thanks
JustMrWill

You should also get an alignment tool so when you put the drive back on, your aligned through the gimbal bearing.

-dave

In my opinion, if the drive slid out easily and you are not doing any serious work on the engine or the engine mounts, an alignment tool is not necessary. If however you had trouble getting the drive off, or are replacing the u-joints....then get the tool, will pay for itself.

Slid right off with no problems (other than "breaking" the gasket seal) Once I replace the lower unit (still on order)I should be able to just slide it back on (after replacing gaskets)? Thanks for the responses.

Not sure if you was planning on reusing them, but gaskets and seals used in installing any outdrive are not re-usable. They should be replaced each evey time the drive is removed.
Same with the drain plug, vent and dipstick gaskets and orings.
They are all cheaper than the repairs of the drive due to water intrusion.

Re: OMC Outdrive Off Question

I am getting a new gasket set before I put it back on. I already have spare o-rings and washers that I change every outrive oil change. Thanks.

JMW
