omc outdrive problems - How bad is it?

OMC 175, stringer, 1976, <br />I just had my OMC outdrive serviced. The mechanic told me their was metal shavings in the lower unit and the upper unit had mostly water in it. They replaced the fluids in both. <br /><br />What do I need to do?

Find a new mechanic! Didn't he have any recommendations? At minimum the unit should be torn down, inspected and resealed.

hehehheehe<br /> better he should have told you to scrap the unit, those units were problematic to say the least. but if you wish to run it stand by to spend coins. find an older tech or dealership that had experience with the electric shift drives.the last of the electrics was about 1972, the last of the stringers was about 1986 or 87. the last of OMC sterndrives was 1995. trust me. save your money and get something that will give less problems. I wont touch the stringers anymore myself. a lot of other techs here feel the same way. if yours has never been in saltwater its a plus.<br /> good luck and keep posting and if your going to keep the unit do as boomyal says.

Yep,<br />You've got an outdrive that was Marginal(at Best) when it was New.......<br />Now, It's a POS, with No Factory to Support it......<br />IF you Truely Love your Boat, Up-Date your drive to a Mercruiser, or Volvo..... Yes, It's Big $$$$$<br />If it's Just a Boat to You, Sell It, Today... Before it Sh!ts, Because it's Going Too, Very Soon......

hello<br /> yep diesel. I have done that before on lake whitney. ran 3 years. just had to change fluid every other trip or so. had a 1972 ebbtide with a 120 OMC. <br /> good luck to ya and keep posting
