OK, here is a question for any OMC enthusiasts. Bayliner, 1986 5.0L OMC outdrive.(NOT COBRA). Is there any outdrive that can be used as a direct replacement without major renovations? Thanks in advance.

Simple answer is no unless you put another stringer drive on there.

There are a few guys on here that actually think this is the best drive to have...I would have to disagree with them though. I am sure you may too!

another stringer thread....

No one makes you read them. Please don't trash someone's thread.

Conversions to a Merc or Volvo setup is possible. It's only a matter of time and money. It usually involves a rebuild or additional build up of the transom. It's easiest done by transplanting the power plant from a similar sized "donor" boat as the cables, pieces and parts necessary are expensive to buy new.

Not to hijack the thread but I kinda wish there was a OMC Stringer topic/forum directory. Sometimes it gets to be a pain weeding through the OMC Cobra and Merc threads to find info on the OMC Stringers. Since I have one, its the only thing I am interested in reading with regard to outdrives. No offense to you Merc and Volvo owners.

the conversion can be done, it is not easy and you must have deep pockets, unless you can get a doner boat, it would be easier to replace the stringer with a rebuilt stringer, enjoy it for a few years and sell it while it is running good. a good stringer will last 15 plus yrs with no problems. most boats are not worth the conversion, just due to the cost that could be incured.
