omc outdrive tilt problems

i have an 86 thundercraft 3.0 omc with omc stringer outdrive.
when i use the tilt to lift motor up it will raise up about 3inches then doesnt seem to have the power to lift it up. after 2 to 3 tries the tilt motor cuts out, just starts clicking and gets hot.
ive check all everything the manual says and power seems to be good everywhere. could it be the tilt motor itself? do they make a repair kit or even a replacement motor?

Re: omc outdrive tilt problems

Could be several other things causing this. Have you greased the fittings on the trunnions? (Under the black rubber bumpers) Have you checked the tilt clutch? Any signs of water? Clutch pack could be corroded. Have you ever had the clutch housing cover off? If put on without the required gaskets (which are also shims) and/or overtightened it will bind the clutch shaft. Try removing the quadrant gear and see if the drive will lift easily by hand. If so, the trunnions should be OK and I'd look at the clutch & housing.

Do a search for 'tilt clutch' and there are several threads discussing OMC tilt systems.

Had the same issue on an electric shift stringer, and the problem was that there was no grease at all, in the trunnions. Instead there was a little powder(corrosion). Cleaned and greased it, now it tilts like a dream.

Re: omc outdrive tilt problems

ive had the clutch cover off. i bought a seal replacement kit for it this season, clutches are good no milky oil.
i loosened the clutch off and i could move the outdrive up and down by hand.

i pulled the wires off of the tilt motor and hooked a wired to the battery and touched each wire on the motor and i got the same thing would only lift the outdrive 3 to 4 inches it will go down but it sounds ruff. thinking motor!

now where do i get one of these?? i have a 1986 thundercraft 3.0 omc???
any help would be appreciated.

i have pictured off my boat in my old posts to help

"i loosened the clutch off and i could move the outdrive up and down by hand."

Do you mean loosened the cover plate and it moved by hand? Did you have 2 of the cover plate gaskets installed?

Have you had the motor off yet? (It's not a fun job unless you have 6' long double jointed arms! ) If not, pull it and check the hammer blow coupling. When I first got my boat the tilt wasn't working and when I pulled the motor I found it all rusty inside and a pice was broken off the tip of the shaft that goes into the coupling. Fortunately I found another used (dead) motor and rebuilt 1 good one out of them. If you still need a new motor, here is a good source for OMC parts:
ht tp://www.marineparts.com/sierra/sierra634.aspx
(remove space between the t's)

That is the page for tilt motors, but they carry a large inventory of parts. I have ordered a few parts (exh. elbows, gaskets, impeller/pump kit, upper seal kit) from their Canadian branch and they were great to deal with.

Good luck!
