Finally started my 1987 Bluefin Cobra 19' today. My question is, using muffs I have more water exiting underneath the outdrive than is coming out the prop.
Also I wasn't prepared for the steam coming from the same area. Is this a problem?

Re: OMC outdrive water flow/ steam

I have a 1987 Reinell 21.5 foot with the 5.7L Cobra. When I use the muff, almost all of the water exits under the drive and I get very little water coming out through the prop. I would expect some steam since some of the water is being "injected" into the hot exhaust to cool the exhaust down and reduce the heat in the engine compartment. If you look, the exhaust bellows that you can see where the water is coming out even has holes that are made into it so hot water and steam can escape there. Bottom line . . .seems normal to me.

Steam is not desirable. Water is being injected into something when/where it shouldn't be, or there is a hot condition that shouldn't be there.

A leaky riser/manifold can be revealed with steam. Ergo, water could be weeping its way into the engine and/or getting sucked back into the engine if the water is in the exhaust passages.

Water spewing out around the transom is completely normal with Cobra drives, the hot water being expelled will certainly condense to vapor, the cooler the air temp the more it will condense, and the more vapors you see, I won't say steam because steam is invisible you can't see it. If your seeing big plumes of vapors or steam just for sake of arguemnet than yes you may have a problem, draw a bucket of hot water from your tap and dump on the ground when it's cool outside and guess what you'll see.
