Re: omc outdrive

You talking about a Cobra (86-93), if so you take out the plug on the top of the upper unit, place back in (just rest it in the threads, don't screw in), remove bottom most plug on lower unit and drain. Then replace bottom most plug, and remove the plug on the lower unit that is a bit higher up and on the same side (just below the front anode). Use a pump, and slowly fill the unit until the dipstick reads full. Screw in the top plug with the dipstick, quickly remove the pump and replace the plug. Let it sit for a while, remove the top plug with the dipstick and check again. You want any air to be able to get to the top. Regular Cobras take about 64 oz of OMC Hi Vis gear oil, Kings take 108. YOU MUST DO THIS RIGHT OR YOU WILL RUIN THE UPPER GEARS!!!
Get an OMC manual if in doubt, dealers still sell them.

Re: omc outdrive

It has been a long time, but I'm almost positive that my first,(1975), OMC had an upper and a lower gearcase. You changed them separately. The upper could be checked with the top dipstic/screw, but the lower required removal of a threaded plug. This had the "ball gears".

My present, (1993), OMC is like Lou C described.

It might not be a true means of identification, but my old unit was painted white, the later one was painted a gunmetal grey. OMC had a couple of different designs that were painted white. A low profile and a high profile. I have no idea how much the gearcase lube varied between those two.
Maybe you could take a picture of your outdrive and have an OMC mechanic identify it for you.

Charles
