Took my boat out for the first time this season yesterday. I barely got out of the marina and the boat started overheating. The boat started to stall, but I was able to limp back to the slip. I haven't started to troubleshoot it yet, so I thought I'd seek some advice. The engine is a 1988 3.0 OMC Cobra. any ideas where to start troubleshooting?

When was the last time you changed the impeller?

Have never changed the impeller. Where is it located? Is in the outdrive, or located near the water pump?

Not too hard to change, do you have a manual? Boat needs to be out of the water as the impeller is near the top at the back of the outdrive. See item # 12 in the picture at this link. 1988 3.0 Cobra

Re: OMC overheating

I have an OMC 800 and I have a bad seal around the impeller letting water into the upper unit. How tough is it to replace the impeller and seals on a OMC 800?

Manipulator
Take your time. I just pulled mine for a water pump
800 stringer. When you get the upper gearbox off there are 4 bolts on the bottom, remove them. Then the manual says to take a metal rod through the steering post and tap lightly.Goodluck It did'thelp one bit for me.I went in from the side and taped the lower cover off. then I had to make a slide hammer 5/16 bolt hole in the water pump housing to pull it apart. The lower gear housing came out all together then I had to drive the pump
housing off.It takes a little time. Replace the water pump while your at it.You won't regret it.
Beef :D

Re: OMC overheating

Since the boat is in the slip, I decided to have the mechanic at the marina check it out. He just called, and said it's definately the impeller. You guys were right. Thanks for the help.
