OMC Powertrain Conversion?

Have a 1976 AMF SLICKCRAFT SS-206 with a 190hp OMC engine and sterndrive. What I have works fine, but what will I do if something major happens. The boat, according to the dealers, has a book value of $2,500 to $3,500. But I have looked at their used boats (90's models), which are priced from $10,000 to $18,000, and I wouldn't swap my boat "even" for any of them. So here's the question. Has anyone ever done a complete powertrain conversion on one of the older OMC units? You can get a brand new Volvo/Penta or Mercruiser (depending on the size) from about $8,000 to $12,000. A new tansom, if necessary, would run about $2,500. Boats similar in style and size to mine, today, cost over $40,000. My boat today, after some renovation, looks nearly as nice as it did the day I bought it - in the summer of 1976.

Re: OMC Powertrain Conversion?

It's a guess when you do not actually face a problem. If something major happens to the outdrive you have one situation, the engine another and in case of a combo-problem you'd face a third situation.

I did those calculations once and ended up looking for a powerplant that needed a slightly bigger hole in the transom than the original, to avoid a major work on the hull/transom structure. According to a 1978 brochure AMF offered both Merc, Volvo and OMC at the time, so there should be no transom structure worries - apart from the actual cutout area may not fit.

I had a Volvo 270 drive which, appearantly, had one of the biggest cutouts. Changing to Merc was a no-go.

Gave up and stayed with the Volvo (new engine & renovated drive).
