I bought a 1993 circa boat recently that has an 8hp Merc 2 stroke motor in addition to a 115hp main. The small motor has an oil tank in line with the main tank (the 115hp has VRO)that I believe is a mixer. There are no identifying marks on it except the OMC on the cap.Are these things reliable? Should I pull it out and premix in a small tank?
Bill

Re: OMC premixer

check with a BRP dealer, the old style portable tanks with the oil mixer I think were desiged for a 100/1 mix and I think that merc calls for a 50/1 mix. check both with a local dealer.
the OMC mixer type tank had some issues if the tank and oil resevoir were not kept clean.
knowing how most kicker motors get run I would use a 3 gallon tank with premix and what fuel did not get used dump it in the main tank at the end of each trip.

As long as what's in there is all oil, they're great. If you allow condensation (or possibly rain) to build up on the bottom, it'll mix-in water instead of oil. That'll also happen if enough water collects in the boat to submerge the tank.

When the oil level gets low, it shuts off the gas. That's a cool feature. A tank of oil would last most people a few seasons with that motor. It mixes at 60:1 which should be fine for that Merc.
