Re: OMC question

It stands for Outboard Marine Corporation. Also the maker of Johnson and Evinrude outboards. Sold to Bombardier, the makers of snowmobiles and PWC's among other things.

Re: OMC question

The best outboards ever made!!

OMC unfortunately went bankrupt back around 2000, and were sold to bombardier, and now owned by BRP. They simply were more reliable than many other motors of most any period.
They were mostly johnson and evinrude outboards, but also made lawnboy lawnmowers, and a couple off brand outboard names, among others.

Re: OMC question

In its day OMC made Johnson, Evinrude, Gale, Buccaneer and some OMC branded outboards. They also made a lot of store brand (Sea King, Wizard, etc.) outboards in the Gale division.

When OMC went under Bombardier bought only the assets associated with the outboard brands Johnson and Evinrude. All other OMC products either went out of existence or were bought up by other companies.

BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products) was spun off of the rest of the Bombardier line for financial reasons.

At least that is the way I understand it.

That's the way I understand it also, and I think the spin off had something to do with Bombardier wanting to focus on the larger scale stuff like aerospace and high tech transportation, and they wanted to get rid of the toys, er, I mean recreational products. I have this memory that the the original family (?) didn't want to abandon that legacy and formed a new company to do it.

Re: OMC question

I believe you are both right. However, I think the separation had more to do with restructuring of Bombardier to keep it out of bankruptcy. I was surprised to hear they were buying OMC since it seems we (the Canadian Government) seem to be bailing Bomby out of bankruptcy ever few years. If it wasn't for government handouts I doubt we'd have them or Johnson/Evinrude.

It stands for One More Cast.

But don't forget about the moron who came in and butchered up the company in bakruptcy and then thought he could out smart Roger Penske on the stock deal. Soros or whatever the idiot's name was. Him and his Green Marine bunch. Jerks!

Re: OMC question

OMC as noted made Lawnboy walk behind lawnmowers. Lawnboy was and still is considered one of the best lawnmowers you can buy.
Toro bought Lawnboy from OMC when they needed cash for restructuring.
