I believe I have a 1979 15 horse OMC, but not sure. Serial # M575140 Model # 159 10S. Can anyone tell exactly what I have?

The engine is actually run as an inboard on my sailboat. It sits in a small engine room under the cockpit. I have a hatch cut into the cockpit floor that allows access to the flywheel. The hatch isn't totally watertight and I think rain water has shorted out something in the ignition system. There's a puddle of water sitting on top of the flywheel. I got no spark all of a sudden. How do I get the flywheel nut off without turning the entire engine? I thougt about engaging the starter motor (electric start) while wrenching on the nut but then thought that might burn out the starter. Any advice here? Then, what's my next step towards diagnosis...points, stator, coil...?

Thanks,

Trent

Hi!
I think you have an OMC Saildrive, like me!
The Johnson/Evinrude 18-20-25-35 (1969-1982) service manual is good for that motor (powerhead).
I recomend you get out all the water first. There are water below flywheel???

Re: OMC Questions

Yep, that's what I've got. The third digit of my model number is scratched and I guessed it to be a 9. Apparently it's an S.

I read somewhere that the powerhead on this engine is actually a 35hp that been tuned down for torque. If that's the case then should I look for manuals/parts for a 1977 35hp?

Fer...yes, I'm pretty sure I do have water under the flywheel. I imagine something has shorted out down there. What should I check first?

Re: OMC Questions

I'm not an expert, but I think you first need to dry ALL. Take out the flywheell with a puller, and check sensor coil, coil, and all below flyweel. Check sparks. Then you need to check carbureator, take out and clean.
OR, call a mechanic.
Good Luck.

:) :) :) :( :)
