OMC raw water pump rebuild...shim locatiom

Well, one day I'll learn to take a picture or AT LEAST write down a description when I tear something down. Replacing the water pump on 1977 235 hp OMC electric shift. I'm ready to put it back together and forgot where the goldarn shims go. My manual doesn't seem to be specific. Can anyone help? If there are other lil tidbits of wisdom having to do with this application, I sure would welcome them. Thanks in advance.

Just did this yesterday.<br /><br />Did you pull out the upper gear when you pulled the pump? OR are you talking about another shim stack

the gear did come out with the pump as a whole unit

The shims go between the bearing/geat carrier and the upper case.

One more thing....Got the pump together and re-installed the lower unit to the upper. Pumps water like crazy in the water barrel. So I'm doing a preliminary inspection, planning on taking her out in the morning. Then there in plain sight on the ground I see that nylon washer (probably 3") that I think goes on top of the swivel housing. My question is this....Do I need it?? Probably already know the answer, just hate like hell to tear it back down. Someone break my heart and tell me to get the tools back out....<br />Thanks!

Uh, guess what BamaB? <br /><br />Hey at least your electric is easy to take off. You don't have to disconnect shift cables in a converter box inside the transom.

Thanks Boom....you're right, it could always be worse. Back to the drawing board!
