I found a good deal boat with an OMC Cobra outdrive. He claims that the outdrive was rebuilt in November '07. Is this possible? I thought OMC parts were no longer available.

New bearings and seals with used gears more than likely.

Re: OMC Rebulit in November?

they most certainly can, mine was rebuilt fall of 2005 with a FULL rebuild.

the guy I got it from changed the oil in the outdrive, forgot to FILL it all the way and it completely melted all the internal gears. it was fully rebuilt by a company in florida, I can get the name from him if you like.
hes a good friend of mine and I bought his boat to help him out so I know he was not BSing when he told me it was rebuilt. I was there when he put it back on when he got it back in the mail.
when he made a trip to florida he took it back with him and they readjusted it because it made whining noises. works perfect now.

Howdy,

You can do a search for this subject. But the bottom line is most people will suggest that you not buy a boat with an OMC Cobra drive (a large number of people that have them are still in state of denial....I know I was!!!).

OMC is out of business.....GONE..... People who really know how to fix them and parts are getting harder and harder to find. Some parts are no longer available.

Most would suggest that you continue looking for a "good deal" boat with a Volvo or Mercruiser eng/drive.

They're out there.

Cheers,

Rick

I bought a set of gears for my 88 omc in 06 without a problem. I had no problems getting the parts but they are very proud of them. For the price of gears and seals I could have bought a new aftermarket alpha drive.

Finding parts is no problem for most of the Cobra drives. Finding a tech with the special tools to actually rebuild it so it will last over 2 hours is the major problem. If they aren't set up right, they just won't last, doesn't matter if its OMC, Mercruiser, or Volvo. They have to be done correctly to last.

Wait a minute! This deal you speak of, can you give us the specifics? I'm not afraid of that drive.

Re: OMC Rebulit in November?

there were enough of the cobra Drives that ftermarket parts will be avalible for most for years to come.
a few like the cone clutch King cobra and the small case 2.3 and 3.0 gearcases may not get much support but I would not be afrid of a cobra drive, they actually worked very well and if all else fails can be converted to Volvo SX style with a few mods.
however I am with DonS, finding a shop with the correct tools and trained personell is difficult.
we lost most of ours in 2004 when the shop was broken into, luckily that time my personal tool box was in another shop.
so now other than some seals and minor stuff I cant do anything with a cobra drive as most the tooling is NLA.

It's a 1988 Four Winns 205 Sundowner. Only problem (for you) is that it's in California...

If you take care of the OMC, parts or techs aren't a problem.
Take a stroll through your local marine shop, and see how many OMCs are in there, compared to all the Mercs and Volvos torn down for repair.

I feel the love coming my way......

'bout time you got your butt back here on the forums.

PS. The reason you see Mercs and Volvos is because they still exist

So does my old 88 OMC. Which I am way too familiar with now, after having to pull everything out of the boat, and dig out and epoxy in new mounts and stringers.
I've been busier than I wanted to be.
