Can somebody tell me exactly what makes an OMC Sea Drive unit  different from a regular outboard?

So other than the mounting, the powerhead and lower unit are the same as a regular John-rude?

It is more invasive of transom making it difficult to convert to standard outboard design. You'll also find that some of its components require more maitenance than outboards and in some applications are difficult to find parts.

coupedeville,<br /> OMC seadrives are usually mounted to a transom bracket which extends off the back of the boat. They are mounted slightly lower than a standard outboard.Being mounted out that far lets the motor/prop get a clean bite of water with less turbulence from the boat.As far as I know, all parts are same as outboard of same year/hp....

Re: OMC Sea Drive???

A recent post was having a problem getting the twin motors to align fron front to to back (if your talking twins); they never looked like the were pointing in the same direction. Many years ago at a Boston Whaler event they had a new Whaler with this problem and it looked funny...the said it was normal and when you get on the gas all was OK. Docking would be the problem. It was hard to believe then and is now...I would avoid Seadrives. The looked like a good idea on 'Paper', that didn't work out. Outboards on brackets took over the concept. ;)

I don't have any direct experience with them. However, I have read many posts on them and the general consensus seems to be to stay away from them. Apparently, parts are not totally the same as Johnsons/Evinrudes and they are very difficult to get.
