I am looking for some help tips and recommendations. I own a 1989 omc seadrive 120hp that went out on me. Heres what happened i had a overheated alarm and major rattling noises and would start problem. While i was out fishing that same day motor ran great earlier. I believe due to lack experience and foolishness i didn't mix oil to gas correctly. 50/1 ratio so few weeks later i take to a shop they very quickly put a scope in my plugs tell its gone the motor that is. They pull a plug my top left one and its dry metal shavings on it. Guys says 5,000 to 8,000 job wowwww.... or repower. Now i not in position to do this and this is my 1st boat. Vested alot in redoing and updating or upgrading it electronics so forth about 4500 there. So in my search u find a company out in Fl that has a power head. SWMS auto marine and machine inc anyone ever used or familiar with? Anyway heres my question will a new power head fix my issues? Should i replace anything else do i waste money and get second diagnostic. For example only guessing what caused my issue true they showed plug but didn't go in details. Show the actual examine of motor been longer then 10 mins.

Welcome aboard. I moved you into the Johnson Evinrude section, because I'm pretty sure the Sea Drive was an outboard, correct?

I'd have someone take another look before you go too much farther. I surely wouldn't drop the money on a new power head or motor without understanding what has happened. Spend a hundred bucks or so to get a good diagnosis, unless you're confident you can figure it out yourself.

Metal on a spark plug indicates a piston breaking up due to ting failure... or... pre-ignition due to running with a lean fuel/oil mixture (not enough oil or fouled carbs) or the full throttle spark advance setting set too high. In either case, a major overhaul or powerhead replacement is required.

The overheat alarm with major rattling you state... Did you continue running it with the alarm blaring until the rattling started? You're not going into detail in this area. In any case, if the engine's worth salvaging, along with the powerhead work, it needs a new water pump assembly, thermostats, etc.

(VRO Horn Warnings)
(J. Reeves)

NOTE: I retired around 1991/92. Possibly some of the later V4 engines and others may also incorporate a fuel vacuum switch that would enable a fuel restriction warning to sound as mentioned below, an unknown factor to myself.

1 - A steady constant beep = Overheating - The V/6 engines, possibly some others, have a fuel restriction warning which is also a steady constant beep.

2 - A beep every 20 or 40 seconds = oil level has dropped to 1/4 tank. (Late model engine = Every 40 seconds)

3 - A beep every other second = VRO failure, air leak in oil line, oil restriction, (anything that would result in a lack of oil being supplied to the engine).

NOTE - If the warning horn is the black plastic (overpriced) three wire type horn, the warning horn should beep once when the ignition key is turned to the ON position. If it does not, it is either faulty or someone has disconnected it (a stupid move!). At any rate, if it does not beep which indicates that the horn is non functional, find out why and do not run the engine until the problem is corrected.

Nothing lost by taking head off to inspect yourself.----I think the damage will be obvious.
