I have a 1982 OMC Sea Drive 2.5L V6 150, model 1ABLCNC, serial #J737057, with a frozen lower unit. It looks like it has a 20" driveshaft. Does anyone know which other OMC/Johnson/Evinrude years and models would be compatible with this motor? I have several leads on available lower units in my area, and would prefer to just switch lower units rather than repair this one. Help!

Re: OMC Seadrive lower unit compatibility

Any V6 E/J that has the O ring on the shaft will fit. Any V6 lower that has a two piece shaft will work if you use the upper that has the O ring.

Some commercial V6 cases have a slightly different ratio but are the dimentions of a V8 case but will bolt up.

There are some V4 cases that have the dimensions of a V6 but again, a slightly different ratio and will bolt up.

If you are looking at a unit that has "cr" stamped in the end of the propshaft, its a counter rotating unit. It will work fine but props are a bit harder to come by in some cases.

A V4 gearcase from 1979 and newer will bolt up and work but will have a different ratio. A 1977 140 and all 1978 loweres will work but you have to modify the shift shaft or linkage.

Any V4 V6 V8 lower without an O ring will bolt up and work but you have nothing for corrision protection except the grease.

Hope that helps - good luck!

Re: OMC Seadrive lower unit compatibility

Thanks for the reply. I have access to a unit from a Johnson V6 235, and it sounds like all of the requirements are met. Will I have to install a different prop to make this configuration work?
