I'm looking at a boat with a '86 4.0 liter V8 Seadrive. Some guys that I know call it junk and instruct me to run away from it. The current owner claims to have had good luck with it and uses it regularly since its rebuild in '94. Engine is very clean (as is rest of boat) on outside and starts and idles smooth.
I'm a mechanic by trade but I've never had an outboard. I know how to use a repair manual and not afraid to ask knowledgeable people for help.
Am I in for a miserable life with a motor like this, or will it be maintainable with some elbow grease from me?

Thanks for your comments.

Re: OMC Seadrive

Personaly I like the V8's. I had several and never had a problem. I would also say that if the current owner has been using it for that many years with no problem then it's most likely OK. Keep in mind that a lot of the parts are going to become hard to come by. However, if you like the boat you can always use it and take the Sea Drive off and put on a bracket and another outboard later.

Also be aware that the V8's were 3.6 liter from 85 to 87. It's very possible the powerhead could have been replaced with a 4 liter.

If you go with it make sure you stick to Champion plugs, FRESH 87 octane, let it turn up and make sure there are NO restrictions in the fuel delivery system.

Good luck!
