OMC service manual question....

Ok I am sure everyone is sick of seeing my posts on here as I never seem to get any replys anymore. But I wouldnt have been able to do this job without the help I received on here. I just have one more question, I hope.

I am putting the drive back together on my OMC 800 Stringer mechanical shift. I have a Seloc Manual, but the manual doesnt cover mechanical shift, it only covers hydro mechanical.

My question is, when installing the shift housing to the shift rod on the lower unit, what are the measurements supposed to be on the cables. My Seloc says 4 7/8" for the short cable. But is this the same measurement for mechanical shift?? I am wondering if someone has the correct manual to cover mechanical shift and let me know.

Thanks

Re: OMC service manual question....

well, I got the OMC book for 1983 mechanical and there's everything BUT a dimension here....

"With the cables attached, give the pulley a 180 degree twist clockwise, pull the cable ends and bring the pulley down into the housing"

would it be before or after that part of the process?

oh - more - ok.... reading....NOPE... just the 6 turns is all it says. no dimensions.

it says to wind it in 6 turns, then turn it whichever way you need to to get the rack teeth at the right orientation - so in other words, you'll be somewhere between 5.5 and 6.5 turns which is the right "window" and that would set the cables in the right place- the spring loaded pawls in the shift converter at the other end of the cable will pick up the slack I suppose.

Re: OMC service manual question....

Well the 180 degree twist actually sounds like when you are installing the cables and pullys into the housing. I did turn the shift rod in 6 turns.

I am at the point where you insert the shift rod into the housing, and then bolt the housing to the lower drive. My manual says to extent the short cable on the "engine" end to 4 7/8", meaning 4 7/8" out from the end of the rubber sheath. Then slide the housing down on to the shift rod rack teeth. This is out of my manual which covers hydro mechanical, so that was my question is that procedure the same for mechanical??

Re: OMC service manual question....

no similar procedure is described for the full mechanical in the factory manual- after the 6 turns deal, they go into pressure testing the lower and then the chapter ends
