OMC Shifter-Hard to shift into neutral

Please help.

I have an 1989 OMC 5.8L engine (1989 Bayliner ciera), and am having problems when shifting out of gear into neutral. The shift handle clicks like it is in neutral, but the gears are still engaged, whether it be reversed or forward. (Whichever gear I just shifted out of).

Before you recommend the Stuart web page, of which I have already downloaded, please advise as to which adjustment are applicable.

I have the new shift cable (red one). The ESA module is the new one and it does work when activating the button. (It has the timer built in and only rough idles the engine for 5-7 seconds).

The one article in the Stuart web site talks about the spring on the “V” mechanism. It talks about the spring being too stiff, and it causes shifting INTO gear to be a problem. My problem is just the opposite. (Shifting out of gear). I believe the spring may not be stiff enough. For when I shift into gear, the engine idles rough for the full 5- 7 seconds, and I noticed that when I shift into gear, (when engine is not running), that the ESA lever roller cam, does not go back to resting in the center of the “V” mechanism.

I believe this could explain the hard to find neutral issue, the ESA is activated to shift into gear and because it never resets to rest in the “V” valley, it is not reactivated when shifting out of gear. And thus I have to really wiggle and jiggle the shifter around the neutral position to actually find neutral.

Is this simply an issue with the spring or is the long and complicated adjustment procedure called for. (The shifting system does shift easily with 2 fingers). Just cannot find neutral.

Thanks for any help.

1989 Bayliner Ciera
5.8 L Engine

CraigLouis

Re: OMC Shifter-Hard to shift into neutral

It never resets to the center because the prop isn't turning to allow the clutch dog to engage the gear. Have someone turn the prop a little while you watch the shift lever and it should center out when the clutch dog engages.
As for the "hard to get into neutral" issue. I had the same problem for a while. I finally pulled the "V" spring off, opened it up a little to stiffen it and put it back on. I also adjusted my idle way down. If your throttle cable has stretched or your linkage isn't going all the way back to idle, it won't shift smoothly. Good luck,
CJ

Keep this in the back of your mind as you trouble shoot. I bought a 88 Bayliner 24.5 with a 350. I had trouble getting in and out of gear. It was almost taking two hands to get it in gear reverse and forward. It came to be the the pinon gear in the lower housing was damaged. The prop must have took a hit and damaged the gears causing it to be hard to sinc up on ingaging. 1000 bucks later it shifts much better. Just FYI on my problem.

Well thanks for the replys.

I hope you are right Lowflyer, and all I have to do is bend that spring so it is more stiff. And I do not have to contend with the OMC Cable adjustments.
