hi<br />i have an '85 omc 5.0l, engine runs fine but when i shift into forward or reverse when engine is first started the engine stalls; once warmed up it usually shifts fine into forward but when i shift into revers the engine is stuck in the stumbling mode and i have to move the throttle quickly back and forth to get iit into reverse. Could the overstroke switch be bad? or what could it be. thanks

Not sure if the overstroke switch setup is the same on stringers as it is on Cobras but if the switch was bad it would be the same in forward and reverse (same switch) however on the shift bracket there are 2 cams that activate the switch, could be that one of yours is out of adjustment or even missing?

Re: omc shifting problem

my shift bracket does have two cams. One on the left side and one on the right which is activated when shifting(has v groove bracket under it). With the engine running, when i push the right cam button the engine stumbles until i release it, when i push the left cam button nothing happens...is the engine supposed to stumble when this cam is pushed?

no, that one kills the other one. hold the one that stumbles, then push the other. it should run smooth again. i cant help you with anything else, but i do know that one!! :)
