have an '85 305 5.0l with an 800 stringer drive. Engine runs great but am having problems when shifting into forward and reverse. When shifting into forward the engine stalls out and it takes a few attempts before it goes into forward without stalling. Then when i try to put it in reverse the engine rpms stumble and after a few quick movements of the shift handle back and forth it will go into gear. Also, once i get going in forward and cruise along when i come to slow down and go into neutral the engine dies out. I've checked the esa by pressing the plunger on the shift box and it does cause the engine to stumble but not die out and when i press the other plunger at the same time the engine runs smooth, so i'm guessing that it works.

Re: omc shifting problem

Is this a fully mechanical or hydromechanical. If
hydromechanical the cylinder not working properly
or your pinion gear/reverse and forward gears are
worn out.
