ok I am rebuilding the intermediate housing put new seals in have the new bearings etc but the manual call for some special tool to be used to get the correct end play these are timken taper bearings why cant I push the assembled ball drive and shaft in and measure the end play with a dial indicator on the end of the shaft to get the measurement ....this is the same method I use to rebuild Harley motors with timken crank bearings
I was looking up the rolling torque method but the engine has to be separate from the intermediate housing to achieve this
I dont see how the setting can change if the intermediate housing when new was assembled with new bearings and seals the shim used in assembly should still give the same end play when I put it all back together with new bearings and seals .......any thoughts .....opinions appreciated ......no marinas around here will touch it
thanks Sean

Ayuh,.... Bearin's, 'n housin's are built to design spec.s, but there allowable tolerances, so not All bearin's of the same part number are Exactly the same, just very close,.....
Hence, resettin'/ shimmin' to design tolerances for ideal longevity,...

Like Bondo said ... identical isn't always "identical." I've never been brave enough to try rebuilding the upper or lower.

right now my only option is the dial indicator going to put it back with the 10 thou shim that was in there and check the end play .......I will measure the old and new bearings to see if they are different
the selloc manual is crap does anyone make a better manual

Yeah ... do a little searching on eBay for the shop manual for yours. That's what you want.

Seloc and clymer manuals make good knee pads.

No two bearings are identical
