I need some help with a lower gearcase on my 1974 reinell 225hp omc!! I just put the lower gearcase together, and I took it out today. When I keep the boat under 2100 RPMs the boat will go forward. When I give it all the juice, it slips, until I back it off to a lower speed. It seems to be okay in reverse. I checked the voltage at the wires at the motor and I had 11.47 volts. What could be wrong? I know the clutch hub spring thing in there has something to do with it. Could that be it? Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

What type of gear oil do you have in the lower unit??? It should be "Premimum Blend" specificly for electric shift units. You don't have another type in there do you ????

Did you ever find the problem? I have a OMC 175 electric shift. This year it started jumping out of gear when I give it "the Juice" to get on plane. If I back off it goes back into gear. I can get on plane if I go slow and easy. Reverse does fine.

Re: OMC slipping out of gear

I had an omc electric shift for many years. I also had the same problem four times in the 12 years I had the boat. The only solution was to have the lower unit gears replaced. Twenty years ago the cost was around $450. If I accelerated slowly and took care of the gearcase, it would last longer.

Re: OMC slipping out of gear

Did you find out what was wrong yet? This may not be your problem, but several years ago mine would jump out of gear and stay out until cooled off. I had to reverse the jack knife connecters just to get home. It turned out my plug connecter for the lower unit was getting resistence after about 30 min. use and cased a voltage drop. It was hard to diagnose!!
Are you sure your hub in your prop isn't slipping?

on and electric there are no parts that engage and disengage when you put it in gear the 12 VDC coil causes the spring to grab the gear and turn the prop shaft theres really allmost no movement

there is no hard engament like a shift dog its more like a clutch in and oil bath its abilty to hold is very dependent on the voltage in the coil and how much the parts have worn in use

the correct oil is VERY INPORTANT or it will slip for sure i would think electric shift oil would be getting hard to find by now

the spring has to be able to squeeze through the oil and grab the gear

and oil with to good of a film strenth would not let the spring grab enough to give full power it would slip like an automatic trans in a car

i cant recall how the if the voltage is regulated in the shift control but 11.75 sounds on the low side a good chargeing system will stay at 13 to 14 volts

if its compleatly jumping out of gear you are loseing power to the clutch

when we were teens we thought it was fun to bypass the controls and do holeshots on the outboard verisons which as and adult i look back and wonder how they lasted more than a day like that

tommays
