OMC starting troubles

Hello everyone, I have been lurking around for awhile, trying to learn all I can. This is my first post, (and many more to come) so this is kinda my intro as well as a tech question. This post may be a bit long winded, so please bare with me. I am the proud new owner of a 1976 IMP Inca with an OMC 235, that has been neglected for years. When I got the boat, it did not run. I got her home two weeks ago, and the work began. The boat did not have any freeze plugs in it, so I installed those. I rebuilt the carb (Holly 4b), changed all the fluids, Plugs, coil, ect. After I spend about 10 man hours tracing down electrical shorts, and cleaning everything up, I decided I better get her running good before I get in any deeper. (I discovered the tilt motor, clutch, cover, worm gear=all shot) So here is my problem. I have great spark, and clean gas. I can start the motor, and after about 5-10 seconds, it dies. Motor won't restart for about five min. and acts like it is flooded. After about five min, it will finally start back up again only for the cycle to be repeated. I am tired and at a loss. Any thoughts? On a good note; the block is not cracked, and H20 circulates good. I really dig this old boat, and would like to restore her to her previous glory.

Re: OMC starting troubles

First thing you need to do is isolate some of the components. I assume you have already replaced the fuel filter/water separater?
Are your fuel lines all cracked and hard? look especially close at the connections and bends. Are all of the hose clamps tight?
Try hooking up to an alternate fuel source. Use NEW fuel line from a gas can directly to the engines fuel pump (inlet).
If problem persists, you have ruled out fuel line/tank problems, and should check out the fuel pump(fuel pressure and fuel volume).
If that fix's the problem, hook up everything like it was and run the engine without the gas cap on.
If this fix's the problem, your breather hose (fuel tank) is plugged.

Re: OMC starting troubles

Got it running this evening! Float bowl in carb was set wrong, causing the engine to flood. Got everything adjusted properly and running smooth, until one of the freeze plugs I replaced popped out. Will be replacing that tomorrow.
