omc stern drive 3.8 liter

rubber boot between boat & drive needs replaced. i have it torn apart but am stuck. on the shift converter cable where do you disconnect? at the motor or lower unit?

Hi Berry,<br />You didn't say what year the rig was so I'm ASS-U-ME-ing that you don't have an electric shift. There is a box on the back of the engine,remove the shift cable from that,and the cut ot switch assembly there will be 4 or 5 screws holding the cover on. Remove the cover;where the shift cable enters the box on the port side and behind there is 2 ratchet pawls,lift these with a screwdriver leave the screwdriver in place then push in on the cable this will allow enough slack in the cables to allow you to take them off the pulleys. Pull the shift cables out. Where the shift cable exits outside the boat there will be a keeper to hold the cable in place. the keeper is held in place with a 1/2" bolt,remove this, then remove the drive sliding the cable out with it. Be careful to not get the cables crossed when you put it back in the box as this will cause hard shifting.<br />Let me know how it works out
