I have the shift cable removed from inside but i can't get it pulled through the intermediate housing? I have a BAD bearing that was making my 3.8l die out once the engine/bearing warmed up. I had metal shavings in the lower unit, once i pulled the drain plug....im unsure if i should tackle this job myself or just take it to somebody (replacing bearings and seals)? nevertheless i still need to get the out drive away from the intermediate housing!

You need to get a manual.

I have an electric shift, so it's completely different: My manual includes your drive year, and I think this is the correct section for yours:

Pg 1.jpg

Hope that helps.
