1974 OMC stern drive with Ford 351. Cruising
when lost power to prop. Engine ran wild rpm's for a few seconds. Have no forward or
reverse gear. Outdrive now apart. Thought forward
and reverse clutch springs were damaged but they look pretty good (some slight gapping but I think that is normal) as does everything else. No obvious damage to splines, springs, etc.? This is the electric shift OMC Sterndrive. Would really appreciate any thoughts. Thanks...

Hi,JMR, and welcome to the board. Have you checked th prop? It's quite posable the hub has spun. When they spin out, they usually act like a slipping clutch on a car,then stop moving altogether. The propshaft will spin, but the prop will just barely rotate.

Have you simply checked the shear pin ?If so, what do you mean the springs are slightly damaged?If the tabs are broken off either of those springs,the whole shattery could shut down.Are you getting voltage to the drive?

Thanks for the replies. Yes we have checked the prop hub, it is OK. The tabs on the screws are also OK. When I described the screws I did not do a very good job. They are very clean with only some slight gapping when they are sat on their ends in a vertical position. When I speak of gapping, I mean that at the top of the screw (where it has a slightly smaller outside diameter)there is the slightest gap on one coil,about a 32nd to 64th of an inch. However, when I looked at a picture of a new one in the manual it looked exactly the same. There are no problems with the tabs.

Hello JMR;
Have you checked the inner and outter splines on the water pump shaft, I,ve seen these strip out and cause the same problems.Usually tho if run for very long the engine will start to overheat. Just a thought.
good luck
