omc stern drive shift problem

1983 omc model ss181, boat 18' starcraft 120 horse power 2.5 four cylinder, when i try to put it in gear with the throttle handle it won't go foward to put it in foward or it won't go back to put it in reverse, when i pull the little red button on the shifter handle to put it in gear, help please, thanks<br /><br />how do i adjust shifter cable

Make sure the Linkage in the out drive is not gunked up with sand/mud . or even just rusted...

You most likely have a sticky throttle only cylinder in your control box.Lube the heck out of it and that proceedure will vary with the control you have.There are alot of different ones out there.
