OMC Stern Drive Won't tilt up

Need help with a OMC Stern Drive that will no tilt up. (m/n: 983486, 120hp, 2.5L, 4 cyl) Both solenoids were replaced and both work. When I hit the motor the drive will work intermittantly. I assume the motor brushes or contact internal to the motor is the problem. Can this motor be serviced with out removing the lower drive? Can the brushes be replaced with out removing the motor? Does any one have any advice on this problem?<br /><br />Steve

HI CHECK THE END CAP ON YOUR TILT MOTOR IT HAS A BREAKER IN IT IF CONTACTS ARE DIRTY IT WILL RUN IN UP OR DOWN MODE. THANKS JASON

The motor is a 1986. I should have mentioned that it only tilts UP or DOWN when the motor is tapped.<br /><br />Jason. What do you mean that there is a breaker? Are you refering to an electrical circuit breaker? I never noticed this.<br /><br />Can the brushes be replaced with out removing the motor?<br /><br />Steve

I had this problem last year and this year it wouldn't work at all. I posted a message here and someone suggested I check the solenoids. When I started following the wires back from the motor, I found a coupling that came apart in my hands when I just touched it. I plugged it back in firmly and works like a charm now. Have you checked completely for things like this?
