This obviously needs to be replaced... anything look like its too far gone? is it very difficult to fix this? I have changed a headgasket on a 4cyl Cavalier, so as long as its easier than that (i dont want to do it again) then im in. This is a 1984 Searay Seville 120hp 2.5L 4cyl I'm thinking of buying... for $1500 everything else appears to be in order but this, good deal or run away?

Thanks,

E

Howdy,

What you're thinking of buying is an obsolete OMC powered boat.

Those ball-gears are readily available for many (or all ) models. Here's one source: http://www.sterndrive.info/ball_gears.html

I cannot speak to the actual replacement procedure (I think it's pop the caps off, remove the nuts, gears, and replace with new......do the seals too)

If it were me. I would get a boat with a more modern engine and drive that didn't have OMC anywhere in the name.....

ymmv.

run. ran tilted- that's what killed the ball gears... and here's the thing:
when run tilted, the 45 degree ball gear angle (before they got wiped right off) pushes the horizontal shaft of the upper gearcase rearward into the housing....makes the bearing cup spin in the bore and the housing is even scrap...
there's thousands of dollars waiting to be spent on that nonsense...

A boat like that is worth $1500 when it is in excellent running condition with just a few cosmetic challenges.
If you want a project, you'll find a boat like that for free soon enough.

My budget is 1500-2000. So while I agree it would be sensible too get a boat that's more modern I simply can't. Compared to my last boat this is a luxury liner at the price of a kayak.

has nothing to do with modern...

buy a 1970's or 1980's Mercruiser powered boat with a Chevrolet V8 or V6 engine.

no way would you have that Searay reliable for under 2K

Is a Seville a 19 footer? that would be pretty painful with a 2.5....
whoever put a 2.5 in that big heavy boat wasn't thinking straight

Ayuh,.... Don't.... Not even for $50.00...

Follow Howard's advice, as yer 2 Grand will buy a decent boat, instead of a pile of Headaches,...
Headaches Waaay worse than that head gasket job...

Don't even look at any boat powered by OMC, or a Mercruiser with a 470 motor... ;)

That was what I was looking for! Not buying it now, thanks!
