I Love My Boat. First off 1988 Omc 5.7 liter Omc cobra sterndrive.
I was having trouble with the outdrive going in forward. I removed the outdrive did the hastings thing. Set the shift rod hieght to the proper measurement (it was about a 1/32-1/16 high) put it back together. And now it makes a clacking noise in reverse and in forward. I removed the oil drain plug, there are some small metal slivers stuck to the magnet. The oil is pretty clean with no water. A local mechanic has a complete 2.3 liter in his shop. My question is whether the lowers are the same or is the ratio done in the top or bottom of the drive? Thanks for any help. Mike

Replace the lower shift cable before you destroy the shift dogs.

Hi Don, Would a bad cable cause a noise in the lower unit. Granted it wasn't making the noise until I re-adjusted everything. I'm trying to coax one more summer outta her before I go with new Volvo power and Dp outdrive. Thanks, Mike

Ok, I'll embark on the great adventure of finding parts down here. I may be able to order it out of Tampico. I am ASSuming that the small metal slivers are a non issue? Thanks.

Yep they are for now. See most times when you go to adjust a lower cable in a boat that has been running well, shifting well is cause the cable went.

Why are you trying to get a part in that g-d forsaken part of the world. And pick it up when you come in for the visits you spoke about. Last time i looked the cable was 80 bucks. American currency.

Try these sites and have them delivered to the place you spoke about in your other threads in AMERICA the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Probably a couple of slivers from the shift dogs, and probably not an issue at this point.
The noise you hear may be the shift dogs makeing contact when in neutral because your cable will not adjust properly. In order to get full forward, you are not centered in neutral and won't make it to reverse, or the other way around.
You can adjust on it forever and never get it to work. The cable is dead, replace it.

Re: OMC sterndrive crapped out

thanks guys, the dam things shifts fine, but makes an awful racket. I pulled it back off and when I rotate the prop in gear F-R there is a pronounced "clack" sound along with about a 1/16-1/8 inch play in the shaft. It leads me to believe that I have some teeth missing in the clutch dog. I rechecked the oil with it laying on its side and it's kinda dark with a burnt, metallic odor. I'm thinkin about about pulling it a part and see if if anything is busted. As of now there is no work for me in the States, the company I was consulting for just layed off 20 so I'm kinda stuck down here for a while. Chief, as far as being down here, how about 10 months of sun, 60 cent beer, 2 dollar smokes, 60 dollar property taxes and pretty brown girls, I can't go wrong. I am an American, served in the U.S. Army for eight years, however if you think you're free there come down here for awhile and see what freedom is all about. (end of political statement)

Not trying to turn this into a political thread, i just know that part of the country cause my brother went to med school there and i visited there more times that i care to remember. Freedom is a state of mind.

To the cable and your original post, the gears are different in a 2.3 vs a 5.7 want the exact gear ratios ? Can't just install the 2.3 leg on the 5.7 is the point.

Get the cable and install it change out the oil and lets see whats what.

Want to discuss the other matter post in the chat forum and we will go for a round on the living in another country bit.

Good luck !
