1975 OMC Sterndrive, manual says open lower and upper lubricant screws with "unit level" Level with what? Trim all the way up, or down as if you were in the water, steering wheel turned?

The lower gearcase housing fill plug is below the fluid check, so I am assuming sterndrive in the down position isnt how you fill it. I checked with drive in down possition and gear lubricant started pouring out.

I had the same sterndrive once, long ago. To check lube level lower sterndrive on a level surface and only take out top plug. Oil should be up to that level. To drain and refill remove both plugs and fill from the bottom until oil comes out the top. Replace top plug first to creat an air lock and then replace bottom.

I have a Stringer 800. The proper fill procedure for the upper unit is to fill from the top plug. This takes time as air bubbles have to rise. They suggest leaving the unit sit for a while and recheck the oil level and add as necessary.

The lower unit is filled from the bottom plug.

I think your drive should fill the same way.

And yes, the unit must be DOWN, i.e running position.
